Bioremediation technologies

Bioremediation is a treatment process that uses naturally occurring microorganisms to degrade hazardous substances into less toxic or nontoxic substances. Bioremediation allows natural processes to clean up harmful chemicals in the environment. Microscopic “bugs” or microbes that live in soil and groundwater like to eat certain harmful chemicals, such as those found in gasoline and oil spills. When microbes completely digest these chemicals, they change them intowater and harmless gases such as carbon dioxide. FWI is familiar with bioremediation due to its experience in direct application of biotechnologies, both for contaminated soil and groundwater, in a large number of projects, such as:

  • Air Sparging/Bio Sparging
  • Bioventing, often associated with Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE)
  • Landfarming
  • Biopiles
  • Natural Attenuation
  • Reactive barriers
  • Bioslurry
  • Phytoremediation

Chemical-physical technologies

depending on type and concentrations of contaminants, and on the entity of the contamination aspects, including time schedule for undertake the work, chemical and/or physical processes can be used for the remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater, alternatively or simultaneously to bioremediation technologies. Normally, the use of such technologies for coils implies that contaminated soils must be moved from their original location and transported to the treatment facility, that can be inside the place where the works are carried out (“On-Site remediation) or outside (“Ex-Situ remediation). Technologies “On-Site” of FWI is familiar with are:

  • Soil Washing
  • Thermal desorption
  • Solvent Extraction
  • Inertization/stabilization
Typical “Ex-Situ” technology is the Landfilling, but also the technologies listed above can be considered “ex-Situ” if the soil is transported to dedicated plant owned by third parties, specialized in suhc kind of treatments.
